Day 7 - Puppies

Just to let you know that all is well!

Puppies - Day 6

Our adorable Tibetan Terrier puppies continue to grow at a rate of knots and their little personalities continue to develop too!

Two of the puppies have almost doubled their birth weight - the other two are not far behind.

Two of the boys have learnt to make a noise when they want something, and with 'Claude', it is usually more food or a bottom clean from his mum.

Judy and I went through the pups exercises today, and I trimmed all the puppies nails which were starting to catch on some materials.

Just a little update for now! I'll add some pictures shortly (there's always pictures!!)..

What fun!

Puppies - Day 4

Every morning about 11am, Nicole or I weigh our Tibetan Terrier puppies. We'll keep doing this every day for two weeks, then most likely once a week if they've all gained well.

The girl (black with white front paws and tiny tip of her tail - born second), was born the heaviest, and remains so, but the boy we call "Claude" (white and black, born 3rd) is only 9 grams behind her.

The other two boys born 1st and 4th are similar in weight but a little lighter, so if we see they're starting to get hungry, we give them first choice of the teats nearest to Summer's tail, as the milk is richest there.

Today we started "The Puppy Plan", which was put together by The Kennel Club and DogsTrust. who set up a new initiative (I think last year), to give every puppy the very best start in life. It is a socialisation plan for the first eight weeks of their life, and can then be passed onto the new owner to continue.

TASKS (do for no longer than 5 seconds per puppy)

1.  Hold the puppy on its back in the palm of your hand
2.  Hold puppy upright
3.  Hold puppy upside down (Nicole didn't like doing this)
4.  Tickle him lightly between the toes with a cotton bud (cotton buds are too big at this stage)
5.  Lightly rub his ears in small circles (I enjoyed this)
6.  Place puppy on a cold, damp town (they all wriggled off very quickly!)

We do this everyday until our Tibetan Terrier pups are two weeks old, before moving onto the next stage. Oh, and we do, do it right in front of Summer. She helps when we do number 1. She licks their bottoms before we continue... aaahhh...

And here are some pictures from Day 4.

Yes, there are four there, all drunk with milk!

It's not unusual for the girl (black) to just sleep on top of the boys who are feeding...

We like to see the sable TTs feeding, and girly loves to snuggle

Oh year baby! This is the life!!

Puppies - Day 3

Summer is now getting braver and leaving them. But as soon as there is the slightest noise or if someone shows an interest in puppies (in the family), she is THERE straight away.

Summer has been more of a concern today. Her temperature is normal. She is still panting a lot and digging, but I'm told that her uterus is still retracting, and will be uncomfortable, so not to worry.  But I do!

The puppies are growing really well, and the girl is taking the lead in the weight department (she was the heaviest at birth - second born).

Above, the sable boy, suckling

We put the pups in a solid dog bed with some vet bed in, so we could
clean out the whelping box.  Summer climbed in too!  Aaaaahhh

Puppies - Day 2

Even though they're only 24 hours old, they are already changing - developing.

They've learnt the skill of 'latching on', and are picking up speed when shuffling around the whelping box, on their bellies like wriggly worms!

The one we've nick-named "Claude" because he looks like his dad (white and black), is the fastest. Fastest to move and fastest to latch on.

Little squeaks errupt from the box, just one or two. You know that Summer has gone for a wander or they've wiggled too far  from mum.

Nicole has been a great help today, playing 'nannie'.

Summer is leaving them now and again, but for the first few times when we took her out for a 'wee wee', we had to put her on her lead and drag her out the box. Once outside, we had to remind her why she was outside - 'Summer wee wee' which she would do ("Good Summer wee wee"), and then race back to her babies.

I rang the vets just to let them know that Summer had had four healthy puppies. I don't feel she needs any assistance, so we may not return for a while.  I did ask when she (Summer) should poo by as she hadn't, and I was advised to put more water in her food and anytime in the next 24hours would be fine.  Within 2 hours (about 26 hours after the first birth), she did a biiiggg poo ("good Summer toilets")

Proud Mum, Summer with her 4 TT pups

Left is "Claude", then the girl, white/sable is 4th born boy,
and sable on right is the first born

Cosy!

We started pupping tapes on them, but as only 4 puppies and
they are all different, it's very easy to tell who is who!

HAPPY BIRTH-DAY PUPPIES

Saturday Night

Well, what a night!

Poor Summer was incredibly restless and all through the night, she just couldn't sit or lie still. She went from being a little aloof to wanting to be very close to me, and each time I started to dose off, she appeared.

Summer, our Tibetan Terrier, at now 62 days pregnant (based on first mating), didn't seem to be in any pain, and when Rose (the stud, Claude's, owner) called at 4.30am, Summer was just restless but there were no advances on the birthing situation. Lots of tummy stroking was called for!

Sunday - D DAY

About 7amish (I think), Rose and I spoke again - still no advances. And Judy, Summer's 'BFF' who was to support me, was told of the same.

Personally, I'd started getting quite nervous on the Thursday evening but just coped and hopped for the best!

At 9.50am this morning, Summer let out a very human sounding "eeewwwww" shout and started straining. A couple more, and I rang Rose immediately to tell her of this advance...at last! I called Judy too.

So here we were moving onto Stage Two of whelping.

My friend, Judy, arrived just after 10am.

At 10.18am, there was a small gush of fluid, and we thought a puppy would follow soon.

Having not been able to get Rose earlier, I called her again and she reminded us to give Summer a caulophyllum pill now and every hour, until an hour after labour was complete ("tones up the uterus").

10.23am:    Summer gave another human sounding shout, had another very strong contraction (she'd been having quite a few smaller ones for the previous 30 minutes) and out popped a round sack. We thought it WAS a puppy for a little (terrifying) while, but it wasn't (see picture below)...

The amniotic sack

10.37am:  I took Summer for the toilet, still with sack protuding.
10.45 to 11.04: More contractions of varying sizes
11.10: A very strong contraction
11.12; Out pops PUPPY NUMBER 1

PUPPY 1:
Boy
242 grams
All over sable

11.35am:  Summer starts pushing and out pops PUPPY NUMBER 2

PUPPY 2:
Girl
282 grams
Black with little white paws and chest markings

11.47am: Summer starts pushing
11.49am: And out pops PUPPY NUMBER 3

PUPPY 3:
Boy
254 grams
White and black

Summer then relaxed and where as we were cleaning and sorting the puppies, we put them back with her to look after.

Rose arrived. Having rushed down from Northamptonshire.

12.30pm: Pushing again, out pops PUPPY NUMBER 4

PUPPY 4:
Boy
246 grams
White and sable

Summer's reaction after the fourth puppy was born, was of such relief, and she relaxed immediately.

We did hope for more, but four is actually a nice and copable number for Summer.

The four at present are fantastic. Both mum and pups are doing really really well.  Summer seems to be a very natural mum and it always amazes me how instinctive animals are.

So I am very very proud to announce that we now have FOUR beautiful, healthy pedigree Tibetan Terrier puppies!

Gorgeous!

The first three pups. The 'white' is still a bit bloody

First Stage of Labour - At Last!

This morning I went out and as I was sitting in my car ready to come home at 11.30am, I got a call from my 18 year old daughter, "Mum, Summer's under the bath and making funny noises like she's in pain".

I suggested my daughter get something nice that Summer would like to eat and lure her out.

About 15 minutes later, "Mum, Summer's in the box under your bed".  Same response. Doors all closed.

I got home and having set up her whelping box yesterday with newspaper and vet bed remnants (saving the nice pieces for later), found Summer happily in there. Well not totally happy.

It is now 6.30pm.

Summer has been alternating between ripping up the newspaper in her whelping box and trying to relax in the bottom of a doorless cupboard for hours. Very restless.

I have spoken to Claude (the super stud)'s owner and experienced breeder, Rose, and she has confirmed that Summer is in the first stages of labour.

So, guys, hopefully when you wake up in the morning, we'll have a whole set of gorgeous, tiny, Tibetan Terrier puppies!

Today is the Due Day!

Oooh, we ARE getting excited!

Summer has calmed down compared to yesterday, although it's still early in the day (2.30pm) for her.

(Above) Our lovely TT, Summer, is just moving from one cool place to another. I feed her some bits of chicken but she's really not interested in food today.

We bought a new set of scales to weigh the puppies, and Nicole (daughter) and I had a practice with a stuffed penguin!

Look at this big pregnant dog tummy! I felt quite a bit of movement in there today...

No news...

Whilst not liking the heat today, Summer is actually very happy and in fine spirits! Her temperature is going up and down like a pregnant bitch's should, between 38C highest and 37.6C lowest, and she's panting, but I don't think it's time yet.

Maybe we'll have another night of uninterrupted sleep!!  Well, the rest of the family anyway.... I'm sleeping in the lounge with the dog!!!

Come on puppies - we're waiting...

Nearly there...

My daughter was born on the day she was due. Will our puppies? If so, we have just two days left!

Summer and I went out today with Judy and her Tibetan Terrier, Harris, to Nonsuch Park near Cheam. It is flat and there is a lovely coffee shop, so perfect for a pregnant Summer walk (and her human friends!)...

Summer did very well, and whilst Harris couldn't get her play, she trotted along quite happily.

Now back home, Summer is still looking for places to get comfortable...

We have moved the whelping box and I've put the indoor washing line along the side of it, and hung a duvet over it, to make it more den like. Above is Summer NOT in the box but under the duvet!!

And now she is sleeping IN the cupboard (we're mid painting the cupboards, which
will now have to wait until after the summertime)

I have now moved downstairs so I can be of assistance with the puppy delivery.  Summer rather likes it. I make the perfect pillow at 2am!!

Training and Treats

Summer our gorgeous black and white Tibetan Terrier was nearly nine weeks old in September 2009, when she came to live with us. She hadn't had her jabs so could only walk in the garden.

We took Summer to the vets two days later for a once over and to also see that going to the vets doesn't have to be scary (would definitely recommend this!). Then a day or so later, we went back and she had her first jab. I think it was worse for me than her. The vet was very gentle and she hardly noticed!

I think we had to wait a few weeks before her second booster jab, when we also had her wormed and she was chipped (a necessity from 2014).

We had to wait a further 7-10 days to actually take her outside, so she could reap the full benefit of the jabs. By this time, it was obvious that our garden wouldn't be a sufficient play area for our TT pup, and I'm not sure who was walking the walls more, her or us?!

So it was with great excitement that as soon as we could take our Tibetan Terrier puppy for a walk and as we live close to town, that that is where we headed. And did she love it?! Lots of admiring faces and lots of cuddles, for our Summer...

I had also booked our puppy into training classes, which started immediately.

What fun we both had! I was a real dog owner novice, but I quickly learned that even though my puppy may want to walk for an hour, that it isn't good for their growing bones, and two or more half hour or less walks, is much more beneficial.  We both learnt about walking on the lead and bought one of our trainers "training leads" (which we still use nearly 4 years later). The group was great fun, and Summer and a flat haired Retriever, became the 'naughty kids', wanting to play when they should be 'training'.

But Summer passed the Kennel Club Puppy Class, and went onto also pass the KC Bronze and Silver grades. Unfortunately, we got a little stuck at Gold, which we tried three times. The first two times she passed everything except the remote isolation. I had to tie her up in a location where she couldn't see me. And boy did she whine! On the third attempt, we'd practiced so much, that she passed this with flying colours. And decided she'd fail on 'stopping at a distance', which she had had no trouble at all doing in the past (this is where I stood at one end of a field, Summer at the other. I would call her to me and make her STOP half way down the field...except she didn't...)!

Never mind! I decided that we'd tried enough, and were accepted into Agility classes.

I can't recommend taking puppies to classes as soon as you can. You learn a lot. The puppy learns an awful lot. It's socialisation for both of you. And if you're having problems, the trainer will ALWAYS have a whole list of ideas from experience, which you can try!

TREATS
Training in class and at home is made much easier if you have a food orientated dog, and even if you haven't, a nice smelly treat, really does help.

At training class, it was suggested that we make home made 'liver cake', and Summer loved and still loves, it!

RECIPE
One pack of livers (any type - price about £1.20)
Bag of plain rolled oats (bottom shelf of the supermarket's cereal section)

Liquidise in a blender, ALL the liver. Gradually start adding the rolled oats. You may wish to remove from blender into a bowl and use a wooden spoon. Keep adding the oats and mixing, so the oats are covered in the gooey mixture. When it becomes difficult to stir and/or there is no more liver to cover the oats, then stop adding the oats. All the oats should be well covered with liver slush.

Next you can start scooping/pouring the quite solid mixture into a pyrex pie dish or similar flat based microwaveable dish. The mixture should be about 1 1/2 cm deep.

Place in the microwave for about 7 minutes. At 7 minutes check the mixture, if it is more or less the same colour of brown all over the top, it is done. If the centre is looking bloody, microwave for a further two minutes. The end result is spongy, not crusty.

You can use the oven instead, but be warned, the aroma of liver will live in your house a lot longer! Cook for 10 minutes in a pre heated oven (about Gas 6 / 180) and check. Continue cooking until brown all over.

Remove cooked 'liver cake' onto a chopping board and slice immediately whilst still warm (it is easier than when cold). Cut the pieces so they are about 2cm square.

Once they have all cooled down, package up about 5 pieces in cling film. Put one package in your fridge to use, and the rest, place in their 5 pack pieces, into a plastic bag and put in the freezer.

To use, take a mini pack out of the freezer the night before use.

The dogs just LOVE it!

Good luck...

Where to Sleep...

Summer used to do this...

...curl up on "her" sofa...

...but now she can't bend in the middle so is trying to find a nice alternative...

...under the stairs with her head in the cupboard?...

...in the kitchen on the cold floor?...

...maybe in her whelping box?... (we hope!)

...or maybe BY her whelping box?... (more like it)

Summer As A Puppy

Summer is doing really well in these last few weeks of pregnancy.  Her tummy continues to grow and she really doesn't want to go out in the morning, but she is really healthy, is eating (although not always until the afternoon) and is seems to be very happy and is desperate to be continually stoked.

I thought you might like to see what Summer looked like as a puppy and I'll try to find some "family" shots of her mum and dad on my other computer, soon.

(above & below)
These pictures were taken when we went to pick "Summer" up
from the breeders at 8 1/2 weeks.  Isn't she cute?

(above) First time in her new home, Summer in her new crate

Seeing Summer as a puppy is making us even more excited
at the prospect of her new babies...
