Puppies - Day 6
Our adorable Tibetan Terrier puppies continue to grow at a rate of knots and their little personalities continue to develop too!
Two of the puppies have almost doubled their birth weight - the other two are not far behind.
Two of the boys have learnt to make a noise when they want something, and with 'Claude', it is usually more food or a bottom clean from his mum.
Judy and I went through the pups exercises today, and I trimmed all the puppies nails which were starting to catch on some materials.
Just a little update for now! I'll add some pictures shortly (there's always pictures!!)..

Puppies - Day 4
Every morning about 11am, Nicole or I weigh our Tibetan Terrier puppies. We'll keep doing this every day for two weeks, then most likely once a week if they've all gained well.
The girl (black with white front paws and tiny tip of her tail - born second), was born the heaviest, and remains so, but the boy we call "Claude" (white and black, born 3rd) is only 9 grams behind her.
The other two boys born 1st and 4th are similar in weight but a little lighter, so if we see they're starting to get hungry, we give them first choice of the teats nearest to Summer's tail, as the milk is richest there.
Today we started "The Puppy Plan", which was put together by The Kennel Club and DogsTrust. who set up a new initiative (I think last year), to give every puppy the very best start in life. It is a socialisation plan for the first eight weeks of their life, and can then be passed onto the new owner to continue.
TASKS (do for no longer than 5 seconds per puppy)
1. Hold the puppy on its back in the palm of your hand
2. Hold puppy upright
3. Hold puppy upside down (Nicole didn't like doing this)
4. Tickle him lightly between the toes with a cotton bud (cotton buds are too big at this stage)
5. Lightly rub his ears in small circles (I enjoyed this)
6. Place puppy on a cold, damp town (they all wriggled off very quickly!)
We do this everyday until our Tibetan Terrier pups are two weeks old, before moving onto the next stage. Oh, and we do, do it right in front of Summer. She helps when we do number 1. She licks their bottoms before we continue... aaahhh...

Puppies - Day 3
Summer is now getting braver and leaving them. But as soon as there is the slightest noise or if someone shows an interest in puppies (in the family), she is THERE straight away.
Summer has been more of a concern today. Her temperature is normal. She is still panting a lot and digging, but I'm told that her uterus is still retracting, and will be uncomfortable, so not to worry. But I do!
The puppies are growing really well, and the girl is taking the lead in the weight department (she was the heaviest at birth - second born).

We put the pups in a solid dog bed with some vet bed in, so we could
clean out the whelping box. Summer climbed in too! Aaaaahhh

Puppies - Day 2
Even though they're only 24 hours old, they are already changing - developing.
They've learnt the skill of 'latching on', and are picking up speed when shuffling around the whelping box, on their bellies like wriggly worms!
The one we've nick-named "Claude" because he looks like his dad (white and black), is the fastest. Fastest to move and fastest to latch on.
Little squeaks errupt from the box, just one or two. You know that Summer has gone for a wander or they've wiggled too far from mum.
Nicole has been a great help today, playing 'nannie'.
Summer is leaving them now and again, but for the first few times when we took her out for a 'wee wee', we had to put her on her lead and drag her out the box. Once outside, we had to remind her why she was outside - 'Summer wee wee' which she would do ("Good Summer wee wee"), and then race back to her babies.
I rang the vets just to let them know that Summer had had four healthy puppies. I don't feel she needs any assistance, so we may not return for a while. I did ask when she (Summer) should poo by as she hadn't, and I was advised to put more water in her food and anytime in the next 24hours would be fine. Within 2 hours (about 26 hours after the first birth), she did a biiiggg poo ("good Summer toilets")

HAPPY BIRTH-DAY PUPPIES
Saturday Night
Well, what a night!
Poor Summer was incredibly restless and all through the night, she just couldn't sit or lie still. She went from being a little aloof to wanting to be very close to me, and each time I started to dose off, she appeared.
Summer, our Tibetan Terrier, at now 62 days pregnant (based on first mating), didn't seem to be in any pain, and when Rose (the stud, Claude's, owner) called at 4.30am, Summer was just restless but there were no advances on the birthing situation. Lots of tummy stroking was called for!
Sunday - D DAY
About 7amish (I think), Rose and I spoke again - still no advances. And Judy, Summer's 'BFF' who was to support me, was told of the same.
Personally, I'd started getting quite nervous on the Thursday evening but just coped and hopped for the best!
At 9.50am this morning, Summer let out a very human sounding "eeewwwww" shout and started straining. A couple more, and I rang Rose immediately to tell her of this advance...at last! I called Judy too.
So here we were moving onto Stage Two of whelping.
My friend, Judy, arrived just after 10am.
At 10.18am, there was a small gush of fluid, and we thought a puppy would follow soon.
Having not been able to get Rose earlier, I called her again and she reminded us to give Summer a caulophyllum pill now and every hour, until an hour after labour was complete ("tones up the uterus").
10.23am: Summer gave another human sounding shout, had another very strong contraction (she'd been having quite a few smaller ones for the previous 30 minutes) and out popped a round sack. We thought it WAS a puppy for a little (terrifying) while, but it wasn't (see picture below)...

Summer then relaxed and where as we were cleaning and sorting the puppies, we put them back with her to look after.
Rose arrived. Having rushed down from Northamptonshire.
12.30pm: Pushing again, out pops PUPPY NUMBER 4

Summer's reaction after the fourth puppy was born, was of such relief, and she relaxed immediately.
We did hope for more, but four is actually a nice and copable number for Summer.
The four at present are fantastic. Both mum and pups are doing really really well. Summer seems to be a very natural mum and it always amazes me how instinctive animals are.
So I am very very proud to announce that we now have FOUR beautiful, healthy pedigree Tibetan Terrier puppies!
